COUNCIL OF PRIESTS
The Code of Canon Law defines a Council of Priests of a Diocese as : A group of priests who represent the presbyterium and who are to be, as it were, the Bishop’s senate. The Council’s role is to assist the Bishop, in accordance with the law, in the governance of the diocese, so that the pastoral welfare of that portion of the people of God entrusted to the Bishop may be effectively promoted. (Canon 495)
The Council’s role is to assist the Bishop in a consultative capacity.
The Tuam Diocesan Council holds office for three years and is made up of:
(a) Ex officio members, Archbishop Neary and Rt. Rev. Msgr. Dermot Moloney, Vicar General.
(b) Elected representatives of the Various Deaneries and Age-Groups.
(c) Individual priests appointed by the Archbishop for specific reasons.

The Sixteenth Council was elected in 2015. They meet in the Diocesan Resource Centre in the Grounds of St. Jarlath’s College. Rev. Seán Cunningham is Chairman, Canon Brendan Kilcoyne is Vice-Chairperson, Very Rev. Michéal Mannion is the Treasurer and Rev. Shane Sullivan is the Secretary.

The Fourteenth Council came into existence on Friday, February, 20th, 2009 in the New Diocesan Resource Centre in the Grounds of St. Jarlath’s College. Fr. Ray Flahertyis the new Chairman, Fr. Sean Cunninghamis the Vice-chairman, Fr. Gerry Burns is the Treasurer and Fr. Pat Farragherl is the Secretary. We wish them well in their work during the term of the council.
