Alpha is a 10-week course that explores some of the basic truths of the
Christian faith, including – “Who is Jesus?”, “Why Did Jesus Die?” and “Does
God Still Heal Today?” It is Christ centred and scripturally based and has
the backing of all the Christian denominations. The course is relaxing, non
threatening, low key, friendly and fun. There are now over 100 Alpha courses
running each year around Ireland.
Alpha focuses on one aspect of evangelisation i.e. initial or Kerygmatic
evangelisation, which aims to bring people into a personal relationship with
Jesus Christ as John Paul said in 1991 when Commissioning Families, in the
Neo-Catechumenal Way: “New evangelisation demands that you present, with
fresh enthusiasm and new methods the . Christian faith. It is not a matter
of merely passing on a doctrine, but rather of a personal and profound
meeting with the Saviour.” Many Catholics today are finding this personal
relationship with Jesus through the Alpha Course, Life in the Spirit
Seminars or other evangelisation courses.
