The Marriage Tribunal is one of the caring agencies of the Catholic Church. In carrying out its task, the Tribunal must bear a two-fold witness:
- it must bear witness to the bond of marriage;
- it must bear witness to the justice and compassion of Christ for those who have suffered from a marriage whose validity may be questioned on recognized grounds.
The Tribunal is approached only when every effort to bring about reconciliation in a particular marriage has ended in failure. Those who wish to have the circumstances of their marriage investigated may contact the Tribunal directly or through their local priest.
Four Regional Marriage Tribunals were established in Ireland by the Irish Episcopal Conference on March 24th 1975. They are located respectively in Armagh, Dublin, Cork and Galway cities.

Safeguarding Children
In February ’10 the Diocesan Safeguarding Committee published the Safeguarding Children Policy for the Archdiocese. The Policy includes a Code of Conduct, Core Procedures and a Confidentiality Statement. It is the policy for all parishes of the diocese and for all diocesan agencies.
In accordance with the Safeguarding Policy each parish has a trained Local Safeguarding Representative. The role of the Local Safeguarding Representative is to promote awareness of the Safeguarding Children Policy and to support its implementation at local level.
If there is any concern about the welfare or safety of a child/young person the following procedure will be followed by all church personnel and volunteers.
All concerns, suspicions, disclosures or allegations of abuse must be referred as soon as is possible to a Diocesan Designated Person.
The Archdiocese has appointed two Designated Persons:
Mons John O Boyle (093 52284) and Ms Mary Trench (087 9315823).

Diocesan Youth Council
The Tuam Diocesan Youth Council (DYC) was formed in January 2008. Made up of a core group of 12 young people it is inspired by Jesus’ special love and care for young people. It seeks to help young people to live as followers of Jesus and to take an active role in the life and ministry of our Church. Tuam Diocesan Youth Council endeavors to ensure that all young people from our diocese are afforded opportunities to celebrate, experience, live and explore their faith in meaningful ways. It will do this by facilitating, supporting and resourcing faith centered events at diocesan and parish level.
The DYC runs annual events such as an Easter Dawn Mass in Cong and a Midsummer’s Night Mass in Ballintubber. Each year it leads a youth pilgrimage along the Tochar Pádraig from Ballintubber to Croagh Patrick and it organizes the Annual Youth Pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick on the second Sunday of May.
Other activities which DYC coordinates include:
The Pope John Paul II Awards: The Pope John Paul II award is aimed at young people aged between 16 and 18 and invites and challenges them to become more actively involved in the life of their parish and local community.
Diocesan Youth Gospel Choir: Formed in January ’10 the Youth Gospel Choir provides an opportunity for young people to gather in a fun environment to sing together. The Choir leads our music at diocesan youth events.
Pilgrimages: In 2010 the DYC organized a Third Level Pilgrimage to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, In 2011 a group of young people from our diocese will take part in World Youth Day which will be held in Madrid, Spain.
