KNOCK SHRINE SOCIETY
The Knock Shrine Society was
established on the 21 August 1935
with the approval of the late Dr.
Gilmartin, Archbishop of Tuam. The
Society consists of the Handmaids,
Stewards and Promoters of Knock Shrine.
It has grown from a mere handful of people in the early years to over 1200
Handmaids and Stewards today.
Honorary Secretary.
Ms. Mary Neary, St. Brigids, Knock Co. Mayo. Tel 094-9388110.
Chief Steward
Mr. Tom Neary, Lugatemple, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. Tel 094-9371619.
The Handmaids and Stewards are the Voluntary Helpers at the Shrine.
They come from all parts of the country, particularly the West of Ireland,
generally on a once-a-month basis. Under the leadership of Mary Neary
and Mr. Tom Neary, they commit themselves to providing a variety of essential
and wonderful services. Their contribution to the operation of the
Shrine, and to the welfare of its many thousands of annual pilgrims, is incalculable.
Principal among the services they provide are:
* Care for the Sick who come on Pilgrimage
* Maintenance of order in the Shrine Grounds and Buildings
* Participation in the Liturgical Ceremonies
* Supervision of All-Night Vigils
* Meeting the Pilgrimage Trains in Claremorris Railway Station
* Meeting of Pilgrimage Fights at Knock International Airport
In addition to the Stewards and Handmaids, there are also some hundreds
of Promoters who do a variety of voluntary promotional work on behalf of
the Shrine. These are spread widely in various countries and come from all
walks of life and all age groups.
The Society’s Governing Body is the Knock Shrine Council and there are
also Committees of Stewards and Handmaids. Regular Meetings are held
throughout the year and each Sunday’s work throughout the season begins
with Assembly, Briefing Session and Prayer. The Society publishes the
Knock Shrine Annual, Editor Tom Neary.
